Leonard Nimoy Passes Away At 83

The entertainment world lost an icon on Friday with the passing of Leonard Nimoy. He died at the age of 83 at his home in Los Angeles.

His wife, Susan Bay Nimoy, said that the cause of death was end-stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which he attributed to a smoking habit earlier in life (he quit 30 years ago). Nimoy had been battling this condition for a least a year, and was hospitalized earlier this week.


Nimoy became famous for his role as Spock on the original “Star Trek” TV series, turning his signature phrase “Live Long and Prosper” and the accompanying hand motion into cultural fixtures.

His acting career expanded well beyond the Star Trek universe, however. Nimoy also directed the 1987 hit comedy “Three Men and a Baby,” and appeared as a guest on numerous shows, including “The Simpsons,” “Columbo,” “T.J. Hooker,” “The Outer Limits” and more.
