Eddie Murphy Is Returning To SNL

The 40th Anniversary special for Saturday Night Live is airing next month, and legendary cast member Eddie Murphy has decided to end his short 30-year hiatus from the stage by returning to be a part of the festivities.

Back in 1984, when Murphy’s star power was skyrocketing with movies such as “Beverly Hills Cop” and “48 Hours,” the former cast member came back to host an episode of SNL. That appearance would be his last for decades, owing to a mixture of bad blood and a few jokes directed at Murphy at various stages of his career.

It was in a 2011 interview with Rolling Stone that the comedian finally described the reasons for his long absence. “They were shitty to me on Saturday Night Live a couple of time after I’d left the show. I made a stink about it, it became part of the folklore. What really irritated me about it at the time was that it was a career shot. It was like ‘Hey, come on, man, it’s one thing for you guys to do a joke about some movie of mine, but my career? I’m one of you guys. How many people have come off this show whose careers really are fucked up, and you guys are shitting on me?’ ”

What he’s referring to is a very small snippet of a joke that David Spade inserted in one of his appearances on “Hollywood Minute,” in which an image was displayed of Murphy’s character from “Vampire In Brooklyn” — followed by Spade joking, “Look, children, a falling star.” Already too busy with his acting career to schedule any appearances on SNL, that joke was enough to turn him off from ever gracing the stage in New York City.

Despite the numerous anniversary specials Saturday Night Live has conducted in years past, Murphy never wanted to come back. But now that it’s been quite a long time, Murphy has finally turned a corner in efforts to mend the broken ties. As quoted in an interview with News One, Murphy mentions the reason he’s finally coming back as “It’s just timing… It just never worked out where the timing was right for me to do it… They’re actually having a 40th anniversary I think in two weeks. I’m going to that, and that’ll be the first time I’ve been back since I left.”

The Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary special airs on February 15th on NBC, and with Murphy’s return, it should be an epic and star-studded evening.
