Eddie Murphy Declined Bill Cosby Skit For SNL40

Saturday Night Live’s 40th anniversary special, which took place this past Sunday, included plenty of memorable moments. But now we’ve learned that at least one potentially great bit was left on the cutting room floor.

Through a lengthy series of posts on his Twitter account, Norm MacDonald shared a story about how the writing crew had put together a sketch that would have been part of the Celebrity Jeopardy segment, in which Eddie Murphy would impersonate Bill Cosby — from six months ago, before the onslaught of sexual assault allegations — mixing a drink for a Video Daily Double question in the “Potent Potables” category.

MacDonald said of the concept: “It was perfect.”

Murphy strongly considered participating, but ultimately he decided against it. MacDonald explains:

Even though he clearly felt this bit would have killed (likely the reason he still wanted to share it on social media), MacDonald admired Murphy’s decision. Unsurprisingly, so does Cosby, who said through a spokesperson, “I am very appreciate of Eddie and I applaud his actions.”

Still, the rest of us can’t help but wonder at what might have been. Instead of this hilarious cameo, all we got was a brief and awkward monologue from Murphy, who many (including MacDonald) credit with saving the show from an early demise back in the 1980s.

Oh well.
