Pharrell, Robin Thicke Lose Big In Blurred Lines Case

Pharrell Williams is a noted singer, songwriter, producer and one of the four judges on the TV show The Voice. Pharrell is a genius with music and interpreting great sounds, and has been responsible for many mega-hits over the years. Now, his legacy may be tarnished following a court decision that could have major ramifications on the music industry.

“Blurred Lines,” the very successful song that Pharrell collaborated with Robin Thicke and rapper T.I. among others to create, has come under fire by Marvin Gaye‘s family. They are accusing Pharrell of using Gaye’s song, “Got To Give It Up” and making it his own. Gaye’s family is saying that Pharrell stole “beats and chords,” from their father’s song.

Earlier this week, the courts ruled in favor of Gaye’s family, awarding them a whopping $7.3 million dollars. They judged that the song was too similar to Gaye’s original creation. This was the response from Williams and Thicke:

While we respect the judicial process, we are extremely disappointed in the ruling made today, which sets a horrible precedent for music and creativity going forward,” Williams, Thicke and T.I. said in a joint statement. ” ‘Blurred Lines’ was created from the heart and minds of Pharrell, Robin and T.I. and not taken from anyone or anywhere else. We are reviewing the decision, considering our options and you will hear more from us soon about this matter.”

Considering that the overall similarities between the two songs are relatively minor, this ruling could set a dangerous precedent for musicians everywhere.
